We all have access to sources of strength and wisdom from which we can easily become disconnected in the course of our lives.  Some of those sources are within us and some of them are 'between us,' in our relationships with others.  I use mindfulness, and Jungian psychoanalysis to facilitate re-connection with those springs of health and wholeness within and all around us. This re-connection can increase a sense of vitality and meaning for individuals, couples and our community.

In my work with individuals, I specialize in crises of meaning and purpose, depression, stress reduction, and anxiety.  However, I have significant experience with a broad range of common difficulties. I offer two types of therapy: 1) Jungian Psychoanalysis 2) Psychotherapy

The differences between psychoanalysis and psychotherapy are not always obvious, but the purposes and direction of the work are quite different.

Jungian Analysis

Jungian Analysis, which I provide under direction of senior Jungian Analysts, is mean to be a long-term, ongoing exploration of the relationship between the conscious mind and the unconscious influences that impact one’s development and character. As such, analysis tends to focus on exploration of dreams, fantasies, repeating patterns of suffering and unhappiness. The goal in an analysis, as much as there is one, is to allow as much room for the nurturing and development of one’s own soul as possible. We attend to the expressions of the unconscious mind in order to allow for a wider and more flexible expression of one’s whole being. The focus is not on relief of symptoms, though that often occurs in its own time, but on the needs of the soul. Analysis requires weekly or more frequent sessions and a willingness to turn toward one’s own depths.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy and counseling, which I am also happy to offer, tends to focus more on adaptation to the stress and strain of the world around us and the psychological symptoms that arise in the midst of daily life. While we may tend to dreams and other products of the unconscious, we will primarily focus on the development of reflective and adaptive skills to assist you in experiencing relief from your current symptoms or complaints. I utilize a number of techniques including mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral approaches to assist you in reaching your goals.

We cannot change anything until we accept it.
Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses.
— C.G. Jung

Because I take seriously the unique needs of each person, there is no one way that counseling sessions look.  However, I utilize interventions with a proven track record of research and effectiveness.  My work is influenced by Jungian psychology, mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy, gestalt therapy, and internal family systems.
